At a glance

Life Insurance, at a glance

Term and permanent coverage that keeps your family secure — and your plans on track — if the unexpected happens.

  • Term life

Coverage for a set period — often 10, 20 or 30 years — usually at a lower starting cost than permanent insurance.

  • Permanent life

Whole and universal life policies are designed to last your lifetime and can build cash value you may borrow against.

  • Final expense

Smaller policies meant to cover funeral costs and final bills, often with simplified health questions.

  • Living benefits

Many policies offer riders that may let you use part of the benefit early if you become seriously or chronically ill.

  • Business protection

Coverage that can fund buy-sell agreements, protect key people and support a smooth succession.

  • Reviews as life changes

Marriage, a new home, a new grandchild or retirement are all good moments to make sure your coverage still fits.

About life insurance

What life insurance does

At its simplest, life insurance pays a sum of money — the death benefit — to the people you name when you pass away. That money can replace your income, pay off a mortgage, cover college costs, settle final expenses or leave a legacy. In most cases the benefit is paid to your beneficiaries free of federal income tax, so it can go a long way at a difficult time.

Life insurance is not only for parents of young children. Couples who rely on two incomes, business owners, retirees who want to leave something behind, and people caring for an aging parent or a child with special needs all use it — each for their own reasons.

Term and permanent: the two main paths

Term life insurance covers you for a set period, such as 10, 20 or 30 years. If you pass away during the term, your beneficiaries receive the benefit. Term usually costs the least when you first buy it, which makes it a practical way to protect your family during the years they depend on you most. Many term policies can be converted to permanent coverage later without new health questions, within the limits the policy sets.

Permanent life insurance is designed to last your whole life, as long as premiums are paid. The main kinds are:

  • Whole life, with level premiums and cash value that grows at a rate set by the policy.
  • Universal life, which offers more flexibility in how much you pay and how much coverage you keep.
  • Indexed universal life, where cash value growth is linked to a market index, with limits on both gains and losses.

Cash value builds gradually over time, and you may be able to borrow against it. Loans and withdrawals reduce the death benefit and can have tax consequences, so they deserve careful planning.

Choosing an amount

There is no single formula. We start with a few simple questions. Who would need financial support, and for how long? What debts would remain? Which future goals — college, a paid-off home, a gift to your place of worship or a favorite charity — do you want to protect? What savings and coverage do you already have?

From there, we suggest a sensible range and show you the cost of each option side by side. You can then choose the balance of protection and budget that feels right for your family.

How we help

We explain each type of policy in plain English, compare options from the insurance companies we work with, and guide you through the application, including any health questions or exams. Once your policy is in place, we stay in touch. And if your family ever needs to file a claim, we are here to help them through it, step by step.

Things to consider

  • Your age and health matter. Premiums are generally based on your age and health when you apply, so starting earlier often costs less.
  • Keep beneficiaries up to date. Review them after a marriage, divorce, birth or death in the family.
  • Read the riders. Options such as waiver of premium or accelerated benefits for serious illness can add valuable protection.
  • Don’t cancel old coverage too soon. Keep an existing policy in force until a new one has been approved and is active.

Questions

Common questions about life insurance

It depends on what you want the policy to do. We look at the income your family would need to replace, debts such as a mortgage, future costs like college, final expenses and any savings or coverage you already have. Then we suggest a range and show you what each option would cost, so the decision stays yours.

Neither is right for everyone. Term insurance protects your family for a set number of years at a lower starting cost, which suits needs that end — like raising children or paying off a mortgage. Permanent insurance lasts for life and builds cash value, which suits lifelong needs such as leaving a legacy or covering final expenses. Many families use a mix of both.

Not always. Some policies require an exam and lab work, while others rely on health questions and medical records instead. Your age, health and the amount of coverage all play a part, and we will tell you what to expect before you apply.

Group coverage is a helpful start, but the amount is often limited, and it may end or change if you leave your job or retire. Many people pair it with an individual policy that they own and control.
